No specific rule of thumb.  It is a matter of what your time is worth to you.

We professionally manage property in San Antonio and most of our clients have fewer than five properties.

We have a property management company in San Antonio. One of our clients has acquired a couple of properties in Waco Texas. We do not handle properties that far north.

Does anyone have a referral for a property management company in that area that I might pass on to our client?
