Post: Advice for running an out of state self storage facility

Thanks for the replies!

@josh That's great advice. I didn't think of taking the calls and paying someone just to do the walkthroughs! My family lives in a town close to some facilities for sale and my dad is retired. Could be a good pairing!

@greg We'll be on the west coast and I'm looking in Michigan for opportunities. It's affordable, and my family is there. Although Bainbridge is absolutely gorgeous, it's also one of the most expensive places in the Seattle area. I've looked around at the facilities here, but I'm certain if they are a reflection of the residential prices in the area, that they will be asking an astronomical sum...or unwilling to sell. Then again, there are some less expensive areas nearby...

Just recently sold our home and thinking about getting into self storage. The only problem is we live in a *very* expensive part of the country, so our only option would be to purchase and manage a facility out of state.

We have some options from our home state (which is much cheaper), but this would be our first storage facility, so I'd love feedback from the community or resources I could leverage in order to make a better decision.

Thanks in advance.

Hey Nathan! Thanks for responding, the last 9 months have been a roller coaster for us! I was going to put  an offer in on the duplex, but I lost my job, so I couldn't pull it off. But the good news is we recently sold our house and are now much more comfortable about looking for deals.

I found a great duplex in Midland, MI that I'd like to pick up but I'm in Seattle! Just curious, but does anyone have a recommendation for a property management company in that area?

Thanks!
