Thanks for the reply.  I will check out the Nest and Smart Things.  I also had the idea of placing a home security camera in front of the thermostat and simply view it on an app from time to time.  The camera would then be on hand for other applications/needs.  Maybe find a camera that would also monitor temp.

I need to monitor winter temperature in several vacant properties during the month of January.  Can anyone suggest a simple remote temperature monitor that works over Wi Fi?
