Post: Career Path Question

Hi Bigger Pockets community!

I am a recent graduate (May 2016), and I recieved my bachelor's degree in Marine Biology. I've decided that I would like to pursue real estate investing as soon as possible in order to build long-term wealth (I'm currently in the saving phase). However, I've determined that biology is no longer a passion of mine, and would like to change careers. Ideally I want to pursue something that will give me experience/knowledge that can be translated to my future real estate investing business.

I've considered getting my real estate license and pursuing that career, although I live in NYC and real estate is highly competitve here from my understanding. It will also take capital to advertise etc. and I'm not sure if I'm ready for that. Additionally, I would likely be investing out of state so I'm sure if being licensed in NY would be as helpful to me.

My question is: Do you have any suggestions of other career paths I can pursue (that will give me knowledge/experience that can be translated to real estate investing) with little to no more schooling necessary? I'd prefer not to spend more money on college if I can avoid it.

I've considered real estate, going back to school for accounting, and economics. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

I'll be there! Looking forward to it.

@Evan Thomas I had a feeling that would be the case...just wanted to hear it from someone in the market. Thanks for your help!

I've been going through so many blog posts, forums, and podcasts that my head hurts! But I guess it's good...I just really want to get started.

I've also been considering relocating to another state, getting my real estate license, and diving in...then possibly moving back to NY after a bit of success. We'll see...

@Christopher Blanco thanks so much for your input! It pleases me to hear that you have 3 HML's lined up...I thought finding a HML would be nearly impossible for my first deal. I'll definitely start building a network ASAP!

Hi everyone!

I am a newbie investor from the NYC/Nassau County area. I'm most interested in multifamily, BRRR projects, and flipping, but I wanted some feedback. What are the best REI niches/strategies for the NYC/long island area? Where have people found success? I also have limited funds, so any financial advice is also appreciated.

I would love to chat about your experiences if anyone is willing. Please reach out! I'm excited to begin my REI journey!
