@Hamza Ali Amzil Nice to see another person stationed out here on oki.  Every question you have can be answered through these forums.  It's very hard to invest from overseas especially with a huge time difference to the states.  since your 19 i'm going to assume your enlisted and fresh out of high school.  Work on doing a good job and developing people skills.  Use your TA and go to school and save all the money you can is the best thing you can do.  Spend a year or 2 reading these forums everyday reading about what people experience.  If you can not make a mistake that someone else made then you're already one step ahead.  Spend the next 2 years saving and learning.

@John Moorhouse Hey fellow Buffalonian, i grew up in and around Buffalo.  My man, do not leave highschool.  You have to look at the bigger picture.  Throughout my young life i've changed what I wanted to do many times.  In the moment I was sure i was going to be something without a doubt in my mind.  BUT you will change and value things differently.  Without a highschool degree, life becomes harder.  Get your education, spend a few years learning and stalking these forums.  Save up your money and get a part time job and build good saving habits.  Investing in yourself is the best move you can make in life.

Say you graduated HS and then you went to college and got a degree in something desirable. You get a job out of college and make 50-60k. You want to jump into REI right away but it'll be much harder to scale quickly and you'll have no fall back if REI doesn't work out. But say you save 60% of your money from your job whatever that may be. You're going to have so much more potential to scale at this point. So now you have a job that if REI didn't work you'd make money anyways and if REI does work then if you save enough and be smart you have the possibility of retiring.

You have a ton of successful people posting in this thread, listen to them.  If you want to make money and be wealthy, copy those who are already there.

I'm in oki as well, been here a while but didn't see the last meetup.

@Account Closed what base are you on?  Hit me up if you want any good spots to eat and things to do.

@Samuel Viscio My wife and I are in this exact situation.  We are currently stationed overseas coming back in December of 2020.  We've been eyeing Columbus as their is a large amount of DOD contracting if you have your clearance.

Hey Marc,

Has it been difficult managing from a distance albeit a small distance?  I'm looking to move to Columbus but if there are potential properties in Cleveland then i'll pull the trigger.

@Austin Steed

@Benjamin Piecenski

Thank you for the advice both of you!  I'm obviously not set on a 4plex as that's more of the most ideal/efficient situation possible.  At our current rate we'll have a little over 50k saved by the time we get back stateside to start looking for a place.  Very excited to be back in the states!

@Brandon Sturgill Very good point.  I view networking and relationships as being the basis for staying in the game long term.  Hopefully when i get back to the states I can start the process of networking, as we'll be ready to pull the trigger as you say!

Thank you for the help and advice gentlemen!

Hello everyone,

My wife and I are moving back to the states in a year and a half and we are looking find a city to settle down. My wife is currently active duty and we are looking to take advantage of the VA loan. I'm looking to slowly get into real estate while still focusing on my W-2. I figure the best way to jump in is through a 4 plex. Everyone knows what the conditions for VA loans are, i'm more curious if it's worth doing a 4plex in Columbus or if Cleveland might be worth looking into. From what i've read, many people are saying that Columbus is very competitive and quite highly priced currently.

Hey my okinawa keyword was triggered for once!  Happy to hear someone else is on the island!  Good luck with the apartments.

Each LLC has a different bank, different check color and different check series. 6000 something check? That was written for Newer Shady over there. The 4000 ones were for Older Shady. 2000s was way long ago, corporate start up stuff. Dusty Shady.

My corporate stuff that owns nothing but looks like my boss, I like to sound like you kinda mighta heard of it.  I weave in local topography or landmarks to sound legit but not too much so.

As long as I can still dress like I'm homeless if I want and get my naps in... just don't have the name point to you.

Love the way you think!  Naps are priority sometimes!

I married my wife and she had no knowledge of how much school debt she had.  It wasn't until after we married did I have to force her worries and make her deal with her debt.  I married into 37k in school loans and we are about to pay it off in 6 months total of payoff time.  Now let me tell you, it has sucked in every way possible.  Will it be awesome to be done with it? Hell yes!  We could of bought a property with that!  There is really no way around it, either you love her or you truly don't.  Debt sucks but you got this!
