@Account Closed

That is great news. I did not know RBC offered this. I have been relying on private money for my deals. I got started investing in the US working with a turn-key provider. It turned out well and was very hands off. From there I started taking more interest in finding my own deals. As mentioned above, funding deals has been a big challenge. Also, if you are going to invest away from your own area you will need to build a strong team in the city you are investing in. A good realtor that understands your goals, a strong property manager, a real estate attorney and a cross-border accountant are some of the people you will likely need. You can get referrals for these people right here on Bigger Pockets.

From your comment it looks like you are going to school in the US and planning on living in one side of a duplex and renting out the other is that correct? If this is the case, you will have a lot easier time. Just make sure you work with an accountant who specializes in cross-border taxation so that you pay the least amount of tax possible.

Hi @William Wong, I have only ever invested in the U.S. maybe I can help answer some questions. Where are you looking to invest and what's your strategy?

I don't currently invest in Calgary. The numbers just don't make sense to me compared to some markets in the U.S.

I hope one day I can invest here as I would love to be able to drive to my properties any time I feel like it but in the end it's about the dollars.

Are there still major mine operations going on in the Sudbury area?

Hey @Dea Chu, welcome to BP. This place is going to grow your real estate investing knowledge 100 fold (at least it has for me).

Thanks Eh Jay!

Hi BP'rs,

I have a friend in New York state who is looking for someone who can perform title searches for him in Indiana, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. He is wanting to start out investing in tax deeds and needs someone to help him do title searches before he bids at the auction.

Can anyone recommend some good ones in those states?

Many thanks in advance,

Cal

Welcome @Richard Schatz

 I live in Canada but have been investing in the Houston area for over a year now. Please feel free to hit me up with any questions and I'll do my best to help you out.

As for the question about oil prices, I would agree with @Richard Spooner

 that Houston will not suffer this downturn as much as it did in the 80's due to so much more diversity in the types of industry that are now supporting the region. My hometown of Calgary is far more reliant on oil and gas which is why I am looking at Houston for the time being.

@Maggie Tasseron

 I'm JR's bastard child who was too ugly to get a spot on the show or in his will. So I'm determined to take back what is mine ;)

@Larry Smet @Roy N. & @Chad U.

Thanks for you feedback guys. I am inspired by your comments and what you are building for yourselves in the States. I  hope someday conditions become more favorable here because I'd really like to be able to see and touch and be more involved in my properties but until then, I think I will just set a goal to own all of Texas as a starting point. I'll avoid Florida and Illinois.
