@Mike Johnson thanks for the insight. I'm currently renting in the Mesa Park area and I like it a lot

I use Green Residential for my property management in the Sugar Land area. They are a little on the high side but very professional, and execute flawlessly.

I have a general question for all of the investors out there, what do you do with your personal residence?

Did you establish your primary residence before or after you started REI? Do you rent or own?

I'm interested in a general consensus from the forum. I'm currently in the market for a primary residence (in Austin, TX) and I'm going in with the mentality of buying a fixer upper, executing a rehab, then potentially rent/sell in 1-2 years (potentially using a FHA 203k, but can do conventional financing as well). Deals are pretty hard to come by these days in the more desirable/up and coming area's of town, so it's making this process pretty difficult. Deals can be had on the outskirts and less desirable area's, but i'm not looking to move that far out. I'm currently renting, and am on a month-month lease which I can terminate when it is convenient for me.

Any thoughts or comments are appreciated on your personal situation or general advice for the Austin area.

@Neil Lubell

Thanks for the heads up. We just signed a lease on a rental starting next week so I will focus on buying something in the later half of 2016. I'll keep in touch with you throughout the year for potential deals! I'd love to try a live in flip and it sounds like you're the one to talk to.

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to post a quick intro about myself. I'm Christian, and  I've been listening to the BP podcasts and reading tons of material  throughout 2015 to try and get acquainted with rental properties and real estate in general. In the next few weeks I'll be relocating to Austin, which has provided me with a  great opportunity to start renting out my primary residence. I look forward to my first tenant, and I want to continue investing after I get settled in after the big move.

In Austin, I'm most interested in house hacking or a live in flip since my wife and I have no kids and can generate enough cash to cover rehab expenses. I'm a DIY kind of guy so I like to think I can handle a lot of the smaller things while contracting out major repairs.

I look forward to becoming a bigger part of the BP community!!
