@Ethan Anderson sure, I can definitely make the drive to Mountain View.  My wife and I will be down near there this weekend so I'll connect with you offline and see if you'll be around.  Also, we visited Tainan last year while touring around Taiwan.  Pretty neat you've invested there, we'd love to hear more about it.

@Jessie Huffey Congrats on your Pacific NW successes.  You are obviously seriously in the RE game if you're going to move just to be close to your future investments, that's awesome.  I appreciate your advice and will keep it in mind.  My inclination is to start with an investment back near my hometown where I can have help from my brother & family members.

Also, I wish I married a building contractor too.

@Fernando E. I know exactly what you mean. I actually just had a call with someone who I connected with via this thread and it (very) quickly turned into a salespitch where I was promised 50% CoC return.

Sounds like you and @Avi Garg would be interested in a small get-together. I think it's a cool idea. @Nalini Koduri I would certainly appreciate your help setting it up.

The meetup will be for out-of-state investors from the Bay Area to connect with each other and share ideas.  PM me if you are interested and please send me some dates on weekends over the next month that can work for you.

@Kimberly Keesler I think that's great advice and I've heard it from a few real estate investors that I trust already, so that will likely be my plan.  Good luck with your offers!

@Nalini Koduri thanks for your response.  I actually have some family in Union City so I am down there occasionally on the weekends.  I'll PM you and maybe we can meet up to chat for a little.  I'd be curious to hear what your experience has been like investing remotely.

@Alex Capozzolo I'm also curious where you invested in Philly.  I lived there for the past 9 years.  I have friends who've recently purchased in Fishtown & Point Breeze.  I remember about 6 years ago seeing things were changing around Point Breeze (with the onset of Newbold) but my buddy just bought a beautiful renovated house (for primary residence) seemingly in the middle of Point Breeze.  So I assume things are getting even better there.

I've been reading a ton, listening to podcasts etc., but I'm still freezing up when it comes to making a decision on where to invest.

My expectation is not to become rich quick or hit a homerun with my first venture into RE.  However, I also can't get comfortable with the advice some folks give about simply investing and avoiding over-analyzing because "any investment is better than no investment."

Because of the property prices where I live in the Bay Area, I've decided to invest outside of California.  That doesn't narrow my decision down very much, but it's a start.

Something I am having trouble with is figuring out what advice to trust on BP.  I'm sure there are plenty of honest & intelligent people giving their input in the countless threads similar to mine where new investors are asking where they should look.

But the large majority of this advice is "come check out my city, people are making a killing here, great deals to be found, and by the way I'm an agent/wholesaler/adviser/etc. and can help (sell to) you."  Granted, I'm sure most of those responses are written by genuine people, who are smart, and have good intentions.  But it's impossible to tell who's who from behind the computer screen.  And trying to make important decisions about investments in areas I've never been to, with the help of people I can't easily meet in person, as a first time investor, sounds like a recipe for disaster.

So if there are any investors living in the Bay Area, who are investing out of state, and are willing to meet for coffee/lunch/whatever (on me), then let's meet in person.  I'd love to learn about your experience doing things remotely.  It's not such a great proposition, I presume, to meet with a young new investor who has only free coffee or food to offer in exchange for wisdom.  But what the heck, I'm going to throw it out there anyway.

I can't guarantee a great conversation, but I'll do my best to make sure you don't die a painful death from an hour of boredom.  I could always bring my wife too, she is infinitely more interesting (and normal) than me.  She likes to embarrass & make fun of me so we could always resort to that.

Ok, that's my pitch.  Feels weird, like posting on a dating site or something.

Thanks,

Chuck

@Kurt Kwart thanks for your message.  Being down the shore is great.  The Bay Area is nice but they don't have beaches here the way we did at home.  We do love all of the hiking and outdoors out here though.

Thank you for your offer to connect.  I may take you up on that because my brother, who lives in Glassboro, and I are leaning towards investing in Glassboro around Rowan University.

Thanks a lot @Bradley De comarmond for the great advice.  If I decide to pursue investments in FL you'll be the first person I message.

Best,

Chuck
