Thanks all for the input. I am definitely excited about the idea of REI, but I can see that I should spend some time reading up on all of the info posted here first.

@Ali Boone I'm glad that you weighed in, it is good to know realtors' motivations before asking for their advice.

I realize that I might sound like a total newbie by specifying my cash flow goal. Obviously I would like more than that if possible! However, what's important is that I'm not looking to get rich quick and am way more interested in a low-risk initial step where I can learn by doing.

I also saw in another member's intro that schools can be used to network, so a shoutout to any fellow University of Virginia alumni on the site!

I just found this site a few days ago, and am super excited to try my hand at real estate investing. I'm in Westchester NY and my initial goal is get a small, safe rental property with $100-$200 cash flow to get my feet wet. To reach that goal, I need to do a lot more research on this site and others.

However, since I have never purchased real estate before, I want to be able to speak face to face with someone to go over all of the potential risks. Do you have any advice on how to find a real estate professional to talk the basics of real estate? I'm thinking of reaching out to random real estate agents on realtor.com but ideally I'd like someone who has some real REI experience.
