Post: water in basement in old home

I have a late nineteenth century home with a stonecut foundation.  There were sumppumps and a vapor barrier with gravel ontop installed before I bought it.  however I am finding standing water in the basement ontop of the vapor barrier despite the water mitigation efforts.  What are my options?  What damage does the standing water do longterm?  I just want to avoid future foundation issues.  Foundation does not show any current issues.
