Brian, thanks. Alas, yes, I just need an IRS-legal plan, without hand-holding. We've had solo-401k's in place for many years and are well-informed on its capabilities and rules, but need to move from brokerage to fully self-directed. Someone who posts here offers SDS401K plan for $500 set-up and $100/yr. Unless we find a better value, that seems like our best choice. Anyone?

I want to establish a self-directed Solo 401K (not Roth). Who has the least expensive set-up and maintenance fees today?

Thanks everyone. Very helpful. Yes, SIMPLE IRA open many years

Here's another question for the experts. I have a Medical Savings Account through my employment (it covers me and my wife). My wife is 65, I'm 63. We've never used the MSA for medical expenses, just used it as another IRA-style savings vehicle. Since my wife is 65, can we now treat the MSA like an IRA and start taking withdrawals penalty-free? Or does the 65 minimum age apply only to me (even though the MSA covers both of us)?

I have a Solo 401k (small home business) and both SIMPLE IRA and traditional IRA for my salary employment income. I want to make ALL my retirement funds self-directed. Can I simply transfer my IRAs into my Solo 401K? That simple?

Which brings up another question: should I "transfer" or do a "rollover?" What is the difference, and what are the benefits and drawbacks to both?

Tks, CL
