@Greg Gaudet

In my mind one of the greatest ways to learn is by doing and as you mentioned finding a job anywhere within real estate is a great way to do that. I plan to intern or shadow some investors/agents in my local area to learn as much as I can. Becoming an appraiser sounds like a great way to really get a deep understanding for the industry. I will look into it! And thank you for the book recommendation, I will add it to the reading list. Thank you again for your helpful recommendations!

@Kat He

Thank you for your response! It is always great to here from others who are/were in very similar situations of my own! I am certainly looking into getting my realtors license. And as you mention, the knowledge I will gain through the courses will be very valuable as I try and learn as much as I can about real estate investing. Unfortunately, I am busy tomorrow for the SDCIA meet-up but I will certainly try and make some in the coming months. Thanks for the notice of the meet-ups!

@Kurt Michaelson

I have “The Book on Real Estate Investing with No and Low Money Down” next on the reading list. As an economics student I find “creative financing” fascinating, learning about the many different ways one can finance a deal!

And thank you for the suggestion, I will look into meet-ups in the San Diego area, and try to attend all the ones I can. And I hope to meet you at one. Thanks for the response!

@Greg Gaudet

Thank you for your response. Getting my realtors license is something I have thought about for a little while now. Thanks for pointing out some of the benefits of getting my license. You mention two great points about how getting my license opens up those perks along with a deeper understanding of the industry. I will look more into getting my realtors license. Appreciate the response!

Hello Bigger Pockets Community!

Who I am:

My name is Calvin Raab and I am currently a college student studying economics. My interest in economics along with finance and passive income has lead me to develop a passion for Real Estate.

As a newbie to real estate I am currently trying to take in as much information as I can. I am reading many real estate investment books, currently I am reading through “The Book on Rental Property Investing” by Brandon Turner. I also listen to the podcast every day. I am also in the forums trying to learn as much as I can.

Currently my interest lies in multifamily property. However I am not disqualifying any of the other types of real estate investing (wholesaling, single family, house flipping, BRRRR method, etc..). I am learning about all of them.

Goals:

I have a number of goals, both short and long term, set for myself that involve real estate. In the short term (1-3 years) I plan to continue to gain as much information as possible and buy my first investment property. My long term goal is to eventually create a portfolio consisting mainly of medium to large rental properties. I plan to create an LLC and continue to scale my business and portfolio. Although I am located in San Diego I am looking to buy investment properties out of state, not just local deals.

If there is anyone from the San Diego / Southern California area, please feel free to reach out to me. If anyone has any suggestions or recommendations for me, feel free to respond on this forum or PM me, I look forward to hearing from all of you!

Like many others here, I am here to network and learn as much as I can. I look forward to networking and meeting others within the Bigger Pockets community!
