I don't get the whole "buying new cars is like burning cash" and the "cars depreciate" mentality. Some posters have openly said they are embarrassed to show up in the vehicles. People, you don't have to live like this!!! Everything you buy…furniture, clothes, televisions, jewelry, stereos, cellphones, computers….everything depreciates so where does it end? Even Real Estate can depreciate. Just in my little area, there are Toll Brother built homes here bought in 05 for 900k, selling for 250k…..not to mention every house value literally cut in half since the housing crash. You think everyone is feeling good about penny pinching and being embarrassed by their cheap cars so they could "invest" in those "appreciating assets"???? Wheres it end? Do you also live in a mobile home so you can put the rest of your income into appreciating assets? Its fine to live like that, but don't put down people for enjoying the finer things in life. Life sentence because I have a car payment???? Thats silly.

Ever been tempted to trade the fleet in for an apartment building?

To be honest, I never had any interest what so ever in becoming a landlord of any sort. Although millions of investors can't be wrong, and history has proven my mindset is not correct. I am really enjoying REI by flipping houses, and hopefully that will progress to more lucrative REI deals such as an apartment building. My mindset has always been I can have it all, if I wanted an apartment building I would find a way to acquire it without changing my lifestyle.

Almost side by side up until 60 and then Lambo crushed it from 60 on.

Lot's of these standard cars can generate great 0 to 60 times. The supercars can generate that rocket speed all the way through the top end.

Currently new 2014 Toyota Camry SE loaded. Had a 97 Tercel before that with 220,000 miles. The tech guy at Toyota bought it when we traded it in. Saw him the other day for service on the new car. He still has it and only replaced the front tie rods. Has over 250k on it now and hums like new.

If I want an old car my brother owns a used car lot for over 20 years and I can pretty much get whatever I want for way below market. Still have a 93 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham black and chrome with black leather. Apparently some old lady owned it before one driver and passed away. The family inherited it with only 72,000 miles on it. They put it to private dealer auction as they couldn't get it to start. My brother bought it and it was only the ignition switch. This thing was cherry the interior was like it came off the showroom floor.

Got it for a little over 2k cash about 4 years ago. At the time it was worth about 5,500 to 6,000. They are sought after in great condition. The transmission is the same they put in Mack trucks and the engines are awesome. They go forever almost. Solid steel and if most trucks hit the caddie the truck will lose that battle.

My mom enjoys that car greatly.

I could get this vette when it comes out but for now I will just focus on my business.

The 15' Z06 is just plain sick. Absolutely the most bang for your buck. The Camry is a sweet car, and correct me if Im wrong but the SE is pretty quick for a family sedan.

The money won't be buried with us, we all have to enjoy ourselves one way or another!

So many people think that they have to save, save save…..pinch every penny until your 65 then live the rest of your life like "nobody else". My opinion is this…..as an investor, would you trade 47 of something of value for 11 of the same valued items? No. So why would we trade 47 (age18-65) years of our lives, suffering and penny pinching to save for "retirement", just to get 11 (age 65-76, 76 is average age of death) years of good years to spend all that saved cash? I don't know about you, but I don't think Im going to enjoy my offshore boat at 75 like I do now, or my Corvette at 76 like I can now. Furthermore, who knows if we are going to see 76. I live my life for the moment. If I want something that I don't make enough money to afford, I simply make more money. Most people would take on another job, I take on another income producing investment. My family lives like no other today, and will always live like no other. I never understood that mentality of going without, for your entire prime years so you can retire someday. Ask any retired person, and they tell you to spend it while your young and you can enjoy it. Sorry if my rant is confusing. Rant over!

Thanks for this now I don't feel so bad when I bought my first airplane at 26.. my first Mercedes at 22 ( brand new off the lot)... etc etc .

I had a touch of the big C at 55 ( all fine now) But when that happened I thought about my life pretty hard.. and when I thought back on all the things I wanted to do and goals that I had achieved I was comforted that I had done many if not most of them.

So I for one am a Stop and smell the roses guy.. And you can't take it with you.. There is a balance... And of course it depends on what your comfortable with.. Since this is a Real Estate Forum I will just say that Real Estate allowed me a life far beyond my wildest dreams and when I had the wherewhithal I used it.. Had I been uber conservative not spent a dime drove my old beater, never travelled the world I would not be still working at my age.. But hey whats life without work.. I would not change my life one bit and I LOVE what I do .. I get to help all sorts of folks realize their RE dreams by funding their deals.. Like Jim Harbough says  ( who has it better than us ?  NOBODY)

You seem like a very happy guy. That's all I want out of life, is for myself and my family to be happy. Great post and enjoy your good health.

That's not to say that new investors (me) should be spending right away and going on vacations, the hard work needs to be put in first, but if you can afford to do stuff along the way then why not?! I have witnessed loved ones very close to me pass away WELL before they should have, who were never really able to do what they wanted and always thought there would be a chance at a later time. It hit me hard and I now know there might not always be a chance so we have to live in the life we have right in front of us.

Absolutely! And I haven't read it but Ill pick it up tomorrow. Thanks

Now there is the life of a someone who has made it in RE and were many hope to be.

good on you keep other than the beetles way to keep the American econmy rocking .. of course the beetle is probably made here.. ( I don't know just a guess)

Thanks!! Actually, I just started investing in RE last year. We have a car care franchise and a very successful restaurant/bar in an upscale outlets mall. We flipped 3 houses last year, netting a 100k which I am thrilled about. We currently have 2 more houses under contract and a 3rd one pending. I hope to complete 6 flips this year. Cant wait to see what the year brings. Maybe I can be posting a ferrari on this thread in a few years!

Jay,

You're kidding right? That's the new Corvette Stingray. I wanted to get one of those, but my daughter is not old enough to sit in the front seat so I have to wait for another 3-4 years. Isn't it cool to have a wife that's working so her hubby can afford nice toys to drive the daughter around? I love my wife.  :0)

My kid is 5 and rides in it all the time. It actually senses a car/booster seat and turns off the passenger airbag. Ive had every body style since the C4 and the technology in the C7 is unreal. Hope you get yours soon!
