In the UK when you have a mortgage you have to have a policy and name the bank on that policy as having an interest. They do it to protect themselves against the "owner" getting a payout for a fire and deciding to walk away with the cash.

What stops a tenant in the US doing exactly the same thing I am wondering ?

I'm here in the UK right now. Norfolk if you know it.

As the title suggests I am returning back to Chicagoland in the spring, my wife is from there and we spent a number of years there together in Oak Park ,one of the Western Suburbs.

Anyway we are looking to invest in some real property to provide for us in our dotage.

Off to hunt round the site now.
