I love the thought-provoking replies.
To answer your questions @Tesho Akindele; I do not know yet what it means to me exactly. Topics I think about are: affordable housing, gentrification, systemic racism, sustainable environment, community, and neighborhoods. How all that will shape our business model is yet to come. We are still so green, don't even have a single property yet but as we move forward with learning the next steps (right now is finding agents, lenders, and which loan/s will be best for the two markets were looking into) we want to continually pause and ask ourselves how will this impact the people who live there, the community. As well as does it make sense financially. Always the first question!
I really appreciate what you said. The balance of a business model and inner peace is subjective for each person and no doubt the bottom line for most business models is asset growth. This, honestly, is what I would like the bottom line for my model to be, however, as my husband put it "we always have a choice".
@AJ Shepard and @Brad Hammond, very cool. My husband and I plan to move back to PDX once I land a job/contract, ideally sometime this summer (came from there prior to starting med school). We are currently looking into house-hacking to get us started. I am very interested in learning the ins and out of investing in PDX. I was recently directed to Multifamily NW and Rental Housing Alliance. Would you recommend those organizations for learning about affordable and sustainable housing? They seem to be 'go-to' organizations for PDX investors.
@Russell Brazil, @Jailan Elayoubi, @Jack Seiden I never want to be a slumlord. I have been the tenant so many times in the past with horrible landlords. I really appreciate your input and stories.
