@Jay Thomas -- where exactly in the Chicago area? We are a licensed GC in Chicago but we are also a licensed sewer and water contractor. Let me know what town and I can get you a pretty accurate idea of price.

We are a licenced GC in Chicago and we own a sewer & water company - this pilot program is in force but not getting rave reviews. A recent (long) conversation with a Chicago plumbing inspector indicated less than enthusiastic response and less than anticipated cost savings. A case of trying to teach old dogs new tricks? Quite possibly. But I do not expect wide spread changes any time soon. We can all keep hoping!

@Lucia Matos - if you are looking for material (not the install) try A American custom flooring. They are in Niles so not far from you. Usually very competitive on pricing and we always price the material out separately from the install. If that doesn't work out send me a message. We are a custom home builder in Chicago so I may have another recommendation for you. Good luck!

It is absolutely a Chicago thing. We do not follow national building codes -- Chicago has their own set of building codes. The plumbing union in Chicago is strong, and the plumbing inspectors are tough. All copper, (no pvc, no pex), and they are particular about the copper used as you have discovered. We had a plumbing inspection a few weeks back and the inspector told us they are doing a pilot test program for pvc but do not have high hopes for adoption in the city. The suburbs are a whole other story but in the city limits - only copper. If your plumber and/or your GC is licensed in the City of Chicago they should know that, its a well known fact.

Just for the record we own a sewer and water company and we are a licensed GC in the city of Chicago. My suggestion would be to find a new plumber (and a GC) in the city. It is an entity unto itself and you really do need someone familiar with the quirks! Sorry you had to find out the hard way and good luck.

We would be interested if you come across something! Haven't taken the plunge but definitely  market we are looking at.

We have used Chicago Title and we also like Greater Illinois Title (had a horrible experience with Precision Title and do NOT recommend them).

@John

@John Weidner you are correct -- hardwood flooring needs a conditioned environment (as does trim material). However, on this project the floors went in a few months back, when it was still cold and the heat was on. The floors were installed, stained and one coat of finish applied and then they are covered. Now we are ready for the final buff and 2 coats of finish so the AC units went in. At this point the alarm is active, the garage is built (blocking the rear of the lot) and the permanent fencing and gates are installed so theft is more of a challenge than a more accessible job site. Worked out well on this one, but the timing of the install is always a consideration.
