This is a highly debated topic. From it, I can only give my own account. I have benefited greatly from having my RE license. I got mine back in 2004 at the age of 22, and it has served me well. My yearly dues have paid for itself in referral fees when I bought my primary home alone. However, that being said, it is not a requirement to be successful in REI. There are investors FAR more successful than me that have done it all without having their RE license. The license is merely another "tool in your tool belt" to get to where you want to be. Having your RE license does not ensure real estate investing success, nor will it provide you with the drive and the will to succeed in any competitive and cut throat environment. All I can say is, I am happy that I got mine to become a realtor when I actively sold from 2004-07. I am not sure that I would get it today, if I am merely investing and not selling my own properties. Just my two cents...

@Jon Huber thanks for your expert opinion I greatly appreciate it. Have you encountered any legal road blocks that conflicted with your license? That's my main concern.

Hey Bigger Pockets Family!

I am looking to begin my journey as a real estate investor in the New York / tri-state area. My first steps are geared towards learning more about the legalities and loopholes of the realty world. Long story short, I would like to know what are the pros and cons of being a real estate investor with a license. I've heard a mixture of both negative and positive perspectives from both sides but eventually all became blurred noise. If someone could help make sense of all the nose I would greatly appreciate it.

@Ned Carey that's an awesome idea that I never have even thought about! It looks like I have to start making a few calls to local agencies. When looking to be an agent at a brokerage firm, is there anything I should look for or are all firms the same?

@Samson Kay just a quick thought...if the calls are going directly to voicemail, try using a greeting with your name, LLC/company name and also add the option to leave personal info so the caller can be taken off of the mailing list to avoid a reoccurring incident. Just a thought.

Thanks for the GREAT info fellas! I'm going to look into the state guidelines and make the cheapest choice possible. I imagine that I'll end up learning more once I get into the business anyway. By the way @Aaron Mazzrillo you did an awesome job interviewing as usual. I can't thank you guys enough for the knowledge you add to the community. Brandon keep motivating and Aaron keep living the dream!

Hey BP,

I am an aspiring REI looking to get started. The plan is to eventually finance my first acquisition. The first step I am taking in this journey is to acquire my Brokers license. @JScott rattled off a number of great reasons you should obtain the license when pursuing REI. (listen to BP's Podcast Episode 10) Long story short I am just curious, when obtaining a license does it matter what school you go to? I live on Long Island and my only two available options seem to be NYREI (Syosset location) and The American Real Estate School. (Hauppauge location) NYREI seems to be the more professional choice with a higher price tag of $550 while The American Real Estate School offers a similar course for $250. If anyone has any experience with either one of these schools or any other suggestions for schools that would be great.

Hey everybody!

My name is Andrew and I currently reside in Long Island, New York. I have always had an affinity for real estate but this year I decided to buckle down and get educated in the hopes of making a career for myself. If you have a minute, check out my profile and make a new connection. I look forward to establishing connections with all of the entrepreneurial go-getters in the Bigger Pockets community. Best of luck to everyone on your future endeavors.

I just want to take this moment to thank the hard working people at BiggerPockets.com. I stumbled upon the Bigger Pockets podcast unintentionally about a month ago and it has easily been the most useful resource I have to date. I also would like to thank all of the speakers who have presented on the Bigger Pockets podcast and the mentors in the forums who have served not only as an inspiration to beginning investors such as myself but, who have also selflessly provided their time and best advice to give back and provide growth within the community. Thank you.
