Hi All,

I will be a new graduate this May 2019; I hope to save the majority of my paychecks while living out home. Being based out of Suffolk County, Long Island I have a few questions for experienced Long Island Investors?

What towns/property types do you have current, or previous investments in?

How do you know a property is worth its asking price (or close to it)?

How do you recommend new investors begin in a rather expensive market?

Do you know of any local events/workshops to network with other real estate investors?

Thanks!

Regards,

Alex

Thank you for sharing your experience and timely response Gary! Wow, it sounds like you have tons of knowledge on the local Broome county area. May, I ask if you have a preference to single family homes over multi family homes, and if so why?

I am aware of the popular spots that students like to live. While we are on the topic I must ask, what do you see in the future for student rentals? Do you think that there will still be a popular market for landlord owned homes in the downtown area, or do you see large, newly built apartment complexes such as the University Lofts, University Plaza, Twin River Commons etc. cannibalizing the market in the future?

@Gary Kline Hi Gary glad to see another accounting guy on here, thank you for commenting! May I ask, specifically when did you begin your investing in real estate? I have been looking at properties in the local Binghamton area for future purchase, with the intent on renting to Binghamton University students. Do you have experience renting to students specifically, or primarily local Binghamton residents? Would love to hear a bit more about your experience and knowledge, thanks!

Good Afternoon Bigger Pockets,

My name is Alexander, I am a current student at Binghamton University completing my MBA in Finance and Business Analytics this may 2019. Upon graduation I will be working for one of the Big 4 accounting firms in New York City as an IT Consultant. I have recently finished reading "The Book on Rental Property Investing: How to create wealth and passive income through smart buy & hold real estate investing" by Brandon Turner and have a sparked interest in real estate investing.

I would like to start a thread based upon the following questions open to all members of the bigger pockets community?

How old were you when you purchased your first piece of real estate?

What type of property was your first piece of real estate?

What is the education you undertook that enabled you to be confident to purchase your first property?

Did you have any mentors from the beginning to your current state in your real estate investment career?

Do you invest in your local market?

What markets do you see with great value in terms of buying and holding in the coming years?

Any comments and connections are greatly appreciated!

Regards,

Alexander
