Post: Self managing STRs from long distance

Hello all, I am looking to invest in STRs out of state (from West Coast to East Coast). My biggest concern / worry is how to self-manage the property, considering that I am brand new and I have no experience in any sort of real estate niche. I want to hire a property manager but the 20-30% fee messes with my numbers.

I've read other forum posts and looks like most people successfully self-manage from out of state. My main question - What happens if there is an urgent issue with property and my handy man is not available to get there immediately? Also both my husband and I work full time jobs and we have a toddler who keeps us occupied as well.

I really don't want my venture into short-term rentals and real estate investment to turn sour. Please advice how you all successfully self manage STRs from long distance.

I am working on getting to the next level currently. It was all done with real estste investing but now I am also doing other cash generating activities for fun.

In regards to "financial freedom" I don't think we are ever really free. Ever notice how many people with the most money tend to constantly focus on money. It still controls them but just in a different way. I view it as more of a means to an end. Solving a math problem. The true freedom comes in my opinion once your cash flow exceeds your needs and you are still able to grow. Then the second step is when you are able to step off the hydonic treadmill. This second step is the one that most miss.

Best of Luck

Thanks @Jason Shackleton for your reply! When talking about financial freedom, most people mean having enough money to quit their job (escaping the rat race). But I agree with your definition of true freedom. Best of luck to you for the rest of your journey!

Hello BP community! I am just starting out my REI journey. I am pleasantly surprised to see such a high volume of active users in BP forums.

I want to see how many of you here already achieved (your definition of) financial independence. How long it took for you to get there? Did you only use REI as your vehicle?

I know there are lots of podcasts with success stories, but I am curious to hear from daily active users of BP forums!

Hello BiggerPockets community! I am Adhi, a 28 year old tech professional from Seattle interested in getting into Real Estate investment. I am a newbie and have very limited background in real estate. I just bought my first home, and while doing research for it, I came across the vast opportunities in real estate investing and got hooked. I am here to learn and build my network.

Right now, all I am doing is reading. I started with the popular books like Rich Dad Poor Dad and ordered BiggerPocket's How to Invest in Real Estate. From my knowledge so far, I think I would be interested in Flipping, Rentals and/or Spec building.

I am open for tips/advices and book/resource recommendation. I am looking forward to being an active member in this community!
