Tutorial - Using the New Forum Menu

Well its been recently updated and opinions for and against it are piling it. It's the new navigation menu for forum posts. Before I start this tutorial I have to tell you I love the new format. It allows for a concise roadmap to topics. Let's take a look!

3620

Now the first thing to notice is in the upper right hand corner there is a "View All" link. If you are more into the old school way of viewing the forum categories, this link is for you!!!

For those of you that want to navigate the new waters then take a look at this. Each of the topics in black bold font are expandable links so say for example I wanted to see the latest forum posts on "Mortgages" I would expand the Real Estate Finance & Legal link like so:

3623

Now you have sub-links you can click to bring you to the forums for those specific topics. By clicking on "Loans, Mortgages, Credit Lines" I get a new sub menu like this:

3626

Now I can choose from my sub-topics which forums I want to enter. This step is very easy to miss, so remember to keep drilling down until you get a link to a forum.

The last feature, and to me the most powerful is the personal customization you can create with the new menu. You will recall from the first image that at the top of the menu there is a "My Favorite Categories" link. This is the perfect place to have your favorite categories available with one click. Its an easy process.

From our new navigation menu click a category that contains one of your favorite forums. In this example we can head to "Real Estate Investing"-->"Investor Basics'-->"Investor Psychology" and open that forum. Notice when you open the forum there is a checkbox called "Set Category as Favorite" like below.

When we check that box this forum becomes part of our "My Favorite Categories" list. You can do this for as many forums that are important to you. When you are done your "My Favorite Categories" link could look something like this:

So you see. The new navigation is not so painful after all. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial.

As always, your comments and feedback are greatly appreciated.
