The power of Social Media in Real Estate
I was asked to join a panel of real estate experts yesterday for the #140 Conference in Detroit. Held throughout the country, the #140 conferences are some of the most "wired" in communities I have seen. The Detroit conference was held at the Fillmore in Detroit and featured over 70 speakers in 10 minute time slots. Everything moved pretty quickly and speakers found themselves talking to the crown of most people's heads because they were listening and tweeting at the same time. It was surreal.
As part of the real estate panel we were asked some pointed questions that I open to you and your feedback.
Where do you see Social media taking real estate in the next 5 years?
With the wealth of information available on the net, is there a need for real estate professionals in the future?
There is an overwhelming change in the way business is done. Social media, be it Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Delicious, Youtube, etc. is changing the landscape of communication and industries.

My opinion - 5 yrs may be too short of a time span for your question. SOMEDAY there MAY not be a need for realtors because of all of the technology. But the age and acceptance of the masses is what will determine when this will happen. I see it more when the 20s-30s are in their retirement years that we won't need realtors. But... that's just my take...

Hey - I've got to ask! I'm glad it was a good event, though.

@Joshua, it was on my short list of talking points but I wasn't able to get to it as it was a twitter audience that I had to address Twitter first. By the time I was done, it was over. I do talk up BP in general though. @Jon, I think you hit it with video. Short, informative videos are going to make all the difference as this machine moves on.

It's hard for me to know where it is going, but the impact will be enormous. It already is for a growing segment of the population. When it becomes so easy that you don't need any technical aptitude, the tipping point will take us into a truly new era. I know that's all general, but I can't see the specifics 5 years out. Well no, here's one; video will be giant. Everyone will use it, both live and recorded.
