Book Thoughts: Getting Things Done

It's been a while since I've posted, but I thought a good next post would be to do a brief review of one of the books that I've read recently and really enjoyed.  The book is "Getting Things Done" abbreviated "GTD".  I love this book.  It's changed my life haha.  I feel way less stressed, my head is less congested, I no longer feel like, "ok, what do I have to do next, have I called everyone back, what property research should I be doing".  The concept of the book is that you have some sort of brain management system outside of your head, so that you don't have to keep remembering everything within your head.  You've only got so much space in your head and it can be exhausting to try to remember everything that you have to do.  Especially when you have a growing business that can be improved in any one of a number of areas, a ton of new leads coming in, your 9-5 work, your life, etc.  For example, with my land flipping business, I would like to get my expenses up to speed, set up some form of auto syncing system in case my computer goes down, build more structured systems for lead capture and tracking, look into outsourcing some jobs, etc.  All of these things used to be in my head.  For my personal life I want to make "thank you" calls for my birthday cards, run certain odd errands, keep track of potential gifts for the holidays, remember items to pack for an upcoming trip, the list is nearly endless.  I think you get the idea.  All of this left me mentally paralyzed as I would replay my mental to do list all day.  Now I if I am out to dinner with friends and I start to think about my investing business I simply think, "relax, it's all in your phone, there's nothing that can be done now and you aren't forgetting anything, so back to enjoying the company."  Getting Things Done teaches a methodology where all of that gets taken down into a physical or electronic system so you can free your brain up for actually working.  I downloaded an app called OmniFocus for my iPhone/ipad that lets me take any new thought/project and quickly jot it down into my system.  It cost $35 or $40 which is a little steep.  But I had about 3 years of iTunes gift cards that I had never used so I just went ahead and bought it.  It works pretty well.  I'll be looking up youtube videos and the OmniFocus website's videos on how to better use the app (another thing that's a task in my app haha).  I have A LOT going on now that I'm really getting going with the land flipping business and I can honestly say I don't know how I would do it without GTD and OmniFocus, they're a great one-two punch.  Alright, back to work!  But at least now I know where to look to determine the highest ROI on my time ;)
