The Importance of Professional Relationships in the Real Estate Industry

When one is in the market for selling or buying a home, the professional REALTOR® hired to represent their best interest can hinder or help with the transaction.

Professional relationships can have a lasting impression; this is true of good or bad transactions. The client - buyer or seller, is the primary concern in a fiduciary relationship and steps should be taken to ensure prudent professional care and diligence is at the forefront of every transaction. REALTORS®, lenders, title companies, inspectors, and appraisers should treat each other with dignity, respect, and of course professionalism. Situations are better resolved with communication in a respectful manner while protecting a client's best interest in an effort to make it a win-win. We are all hired to work with buyers and sellers in real estate transactions so that each party can have representation and remove the stressful and emotional aspect that can occur with such financial obligations.

When real estate professionals loose communication skills, the clients suffer the consequences. This is a grave mistake and this goes against the code of Ethics for REALTORS®. Communication is key in any relationship, and when it comes to taking care of clients, individual feelings and emotions must be removed. One may hold a grudge or use the silent treatment in a private relationship, but in a professional relationship this can have a severe impact on a client and a transaction, especially where specific performance is required by a contract.

If you are allergic to peanuts, would you gouge yourself with peanut butter? One would hope the silent treatment isn't the current communication standard between co-workers. Granted, this is an exaggerated example, but I'm sure the point is understood.

Communication and professionalism go hand in hand. The likelihood is high that business will be conducted again with one or more REALTORS® and strong communication skills can help build a stronger community in our industry. Take care of each other in order to take care of our industry.
