Moving Tips

You have finally signed your closing documents and have been informed that your loan has funded, the home is officially yours! The likely hood is very high that you have been packing for a while in an effort to make your move a little bit smoother. Your moving plan is now in full effect, and often times it seems to be a rush-rush feeling and anxiety starts to kick in.

Relax, it’s going to be just fine, especially if you follow a few tips to relieve some stress and ensure you have everything you need between homes.

Make 8X10 signs to “name” every room and tape them at the designated location. These can be hand written with a thick marker, or printed in large font. Whether you are using a moving company or you have great friends willing to help you, these signs will certainly keep you from having to answer the dreaded, “where does this go?” question. These signs should match the room names written on your moving boxes. This will help ensure that Tommy’s toys go in the game room, or in his bedroom, according to your box and sign names.

Pack as if going on a trip. When we travel, we tend to pack all of the necessities such as prescriptions, personal toiletries, glasses, makeup, hair appliances, shoes, and clothes. Designate one room or specific area where the luggage will be placed so that when you wake up the next morning, you have easy access to everything as you would when traveling.

Pack a “must have box” and label it “kitchen” or “pantry” so that you will know exactly where to look amongst the sea of boxes. In it, one should pack disposable plates, cups, cutlery, napkins/paper towels, hand soap and sanitizer, toilet paper/wipes, trash bags, and nonperishable snacks and drinks. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to keep a list of phone numbers for the companies you will be using for service in your home in the event you need to call them. This will remove the pressure of having to unpack everything in one day or having to rummage through boxes to find items most likely not packed together. After all, how many people pack toilet paper with their dishes?

Limit your boxes and reduce unpacking time by leaving clothes in your dresser drawers. Simply ask the moving company to tape the drawers to secure them in place if the furniture isn’t too cumbersome, and if it can be moved with a dolly. If drawers can’t be secured, it’s worth the time to pull them out, and cover the items in the drawer with towels or saran wrap. These are items you can take in your car if the moving company doesn’t want to take liability for the items in the drawers.

Use Rubber bands tied around the hangers of your hanging clothes, to keep them from falling off the hanger. This will also help you keep your clothes in order by bundling like clothes such as jeans, pants, casual shirts, etc; together. Once you get to your new home, you can simply place then in the order you like and cut the rubber band off.

Order out. There is no need to add more work by making yourself cook (don’t forget to pack a pan in your “must have” box if you do plan on cooking), unless you absolutely hate take out. Everyone deserves a break from the move, allow yourself some time to relax and enjoy a meal.

Planning is always a good thing, so don’t forget these tips to help make your move a little smoother. The sooner you unpack, the sooner you can enjoy your home; I just can’t guarantee your friends will be “available” the next time you move!
