What do I want this to be or become?
Woah. I can begin anywhere I want and say whatever I wish. Isn’t that the whole point of a blog? Will people like what I say? Will they not? Do I really care? I feel like there is a story to tell with a City like Detroit. It’s a place I used to joke about and now I find myself defending. If I have to hear the hosts of the podcast make fun of this place again...Am I allowed to threaten? I served in the Military for seven years and saw some tough living conditions. Maybe that's why I'm not deterred by the negative stigma attached to this place. The people of Detroit express raw patriotism for their gem of a city, so much so that I want them to be successful.
I moved back to Michigan to work on a business degree. I also had some experience in real estate after buying my first multi-family home (MFH) in San Diego, CA. I house hacked for a couple years and eventually sold the property and moved to Canton.
As soon as I moved here, I knew that I needed to buy another property. I missed the feeling of ownership and providing others with a comfortable place to live. Immediately, I started riding my bike around the neighborhoods of Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor looking for my next investment. My first thought was everything seems so cheap here, with the exception of areas in Ann Arbor. I even looked in Detroit. I knew there would be a lot for sale but I had no idea what the market was like and in some ways still don’t.
What’s to follow is a chronicle of my restart in Metro Detroit. I am a moderate risk taker because of my age and experience. I am an optimist and that might be a flaw when it comes to investing. However, I have had a lot of success thus far. I want this to be real and not shrouded by my optimism. I want to tell of my mistakes in hopes that others will learn; I want to network and share; I want to try and explain the energy of this area and how contagious it can be. I want to attract others to Detroit for more than just real estate. Enjoy…or don’t
