The Southwest Florida Gulf Coast has generations of beach goers, shoppers and dining at some of the finest restaurants anywhere. and Luxury Homes to…by Pippie Hull

Bonita Springs, FL is in Lee County. As of 2016 the city’s population was 54,198 ranking it the 699thlargest US city. She comes with a history as beautiful as her name.

In fact, the city’s history dates back thousands of years. Eight actually. Over five hundred years ago Ponce de Leon came upon the Calusa Indians. This group had been in the area for thousands of years. Through the years these people enjoyed all that the land had to offer.

Of course being on the shores of southwest Florida, the Calusa Indians were close to the water. Being within such close proximity to the ocean, surly anyone would want to go fishing. Throughout the civilization they were constructing mounds and villages. Two to three centuries later the Calusa Indian population wound up succumbing to tragedies of the era. Diseases and slavery.

Then in the late 1800’s the area became known as Survey and the nearby river Surveyor’s Creek. Named for a group of surveyors who had made camp along the beach. The city grew year after year, family by family. Not only were homes decorating the landscape. Eventually a hotel was as well. Those beautiful waters and their inviting fishing environment helping attract tourists to the area.

However, this bustling city’s name soon came under reconsideration. “Looking for the perfect place to move the family, purchase your first home, start your business or to retire to? Come to Survey along the shores of Surveyor’s Creek.” That doesn’t sound very appealing, does it? Developers at the time felt it could be more so. Therefore, the name of the city became Bonita Springs. Surveyor’s Creek became Imperial River. “Home for sale in Bonita Springs close to the Imperial River shoreline. Bring the family, fishing poles, boat and your best bid. This could soon be your home!” Definitely sounds more inviting.

In due time, transportation began evolving. The horse and buggy soon became the motor car. Through the generations the automobiles have been improving. Today they are manufacturing vehicles that park themselves. Some even run off of a charge rather than solely on fuel.

Hence, the Fort Myers-Southern Railroad soon made its way to town. Bonita Springs is located between Fort Myers and Naples. Eventually people were able to travel to the intriguing entertainment and shopping available in Naples. Today, the fifteen minute trip to all that is available in Naples is easily made in the family vehicle. Grandiose homes in Bonita Springs near the beach are the spot for relaxation and tranquility. From greeting the day with a cup of coffee and the sunrise. To closing out the evening with a good book and the sunset. Taking the boat out on a lazy Sunday afternoon for some fishing. Bonita Springs is indeed the spot to raise a family or settle in and retire.
