Week 7 | Our Mindset
Here I am, 4 weeks later. It’s been evident that in this business, one has to fight to maintaining a winning mindset. I have to admit that after my major life lesson a month ago, I went into a sort of “real estate depression.” Calls to my broker were less frequent. I analyzed less deals. My entire process created just weeks before was sidetracked. The good news is that one of the culprits was my 1-year anniversary celebration. Circumstantially, real estate was just not on my mind that week. The challenge, though, was getting back to continue the process and maintain focus.
What’s interesting is that real estate was all around me. When in Mexico, there was a new beach-front hotel being built right outside our room. We even had a 3-hour long conversation with a sales person about how to purchase a vacation membership (long story that will never happen again). I got back home only to be surrounded by constant construction on the grounds at my office and in my own apartment complex. It’s everywhere!!!
Even with the constant presence of housing and building projects around me, I was distant from my own goals set forth a month ago. Much of it I accredit to the recent lesson learned about being on the same page with my wife. I felt that I couldn’t really move forward from that point until we were more in sync with the real estate goals. Some of it also has to do with my own laziness and excuses as well. I hit a block with financing because something came up from five years ago that I needed to address. Either way, I needed to get going again.
Thank God for Bigger Pockets! About a week ago, I decided to listen a podcast, and I started to get a sense of passion again. I realized that I can’t let obstacles hold me back. What I was experiencing wasn’t really that huge of a setback anyway. One guest on the podcast was talking about the millions of dollars lost on his journey. Now that’s a setback! I continued to listen to podcasts and watched the most recent webinar on buying your first (or next) rental property.
So what’s next? Well, I applied for a library card. Why? Mindset! It is time to crack open some Robert Kiyosaki and share some concepts with my wife. I will spend some time educating both myself and my wife on key real estate and business principles. In the process, I know my mindset and understanding will expand. Someone once said that the best way to learn is to teach. So here we go.
