How do you convince family & friends to send you self-storage deals?

When you are new to any business, your family and friends may be skeptical as to whether or not you can succeed. If you have been in the self-storage industry for a long time, you probably remember how hard it was in the beginning to get friends and family to trust you. Now that you are more experienced, they might be begging to partner with you. So how do you get from point A to point B?

First of all, you have to build confidence. They have to see you as an expert in your field instead of a brother or sister or child or friend. They have to understand that you know what you are talking about when it comes to self-storage.

If you don’t already have experience in self-storage and you are trying to get them to introduce you to people that they know, then you have to build their confidence without a property. Show them what education you have taken. Introduce them to your self-storage partners. Talk about what you have learned. Discuss what financing options you have found that will work for you. Once they believe that you can get the money, the more likely they will be to introduce you to the right people.

Once you have a deal under your belt that is going well, this gets easier. When people ask you how you are or what you are doing, you can let them know how well the self-storage industry is treating you. If they ask follow-up questions, keep going. If they don’t, you planted a seed.

The more that you are able to share your successes with them, the more they will see you as the expert you are becoming in self-storage. Don’t be afraid to tell them about mistakes or problems and how you overcame them. This will also show your growth. As always, happy investing.
