How to Deal with Stress in Investing

I swear that every house and transaction has its own set of problems. Between contractors, inspectors, to buyers themselves, all have unique issues that come up. The stress can be a lot or a little depending on how much work you do. But never the less, it’s still stressful. Some days, all is right in the world and some I want to hide under a rock away from everyone. But regardless, there is a way to alleviate the day to day stresses of being an investor.

Exercise

This is an easy one that most people know but don’t follow! Exercise provides so many benefits other than just getting in shape. It helps to clear your mind after a stressful day and release any built up tension. It can also help you make better food choices throughout the day since you know you’ve put in hard work at the gym. But you don’t have to even be in the gym to get a good work out. Sometimes the best workouts are done outside where I can get fresh air. Take a 30 min walk or jog around your neighborhood to clear your mind and refocus your attention.

Meditation

I can tell you that it is super hard to sit and try to keep my mind quite when I have a million things going on. But good news, meditation doesn’t have to be this long drawn out process. All you need is 5-10 mins to really feel the benefits. I suggest you do this first thing in the morning while everyone is still sleeping. Most things you read about meditation will tell you to fully clear your mind. But I have found what sets my whole day is mediating on how I want my day to go. I meditate on leads that I want to get and contracts that I get accepted. I also mediate on how I want my meetings to go and visualize how I want them to play out. You’ll be surprised how energized and excited you’ll be for your day when you’re done.

Massages

Early on, I neglected massages because I thought they were too expensive. Now, I get one at least once a week to help with stress. It is seriously worth the money! I tend to keep stress in my upper shoulders which can lead to tension headaches. I kept fighting through them until I finally broke down and got a massage. It was a life changer! Stress is going to come in this business but doing something as little as getting a weekly massage, can make all the difference to your body.

Half work/ Half play

You know the saying “work hard, play hard” but this one you should take seriously! Not one single person can be “on” all the time. I believe that the biggest stress reliever for me is having a good time with my family or friends. And this doesn’t have to be a big planned out vacation. It can be as simple as dinner at your favorite restaurant or a movie night in. Anything that can take your mind off of work for a bit is fine. For the longest time, I really believed that I had to be working my business 24/7. I soon found out that not only was it burning out me, but also my family and friends. Yes, growing your business is important but you not being stressed all the time is more important. Take once or twice a week to really turn the phones off for a bit and enjoy the people around you!

As always, happy hunting!

  1. Great post! Balance is essential in all aspects of our live. Scheduling my massage as we speak.

  2. It's important to maintain work life balance. Exhaustion could have a negative impact on both professional as well as personal life.
