- Have an electrician inspect your property’s electrical system every 10 years. Of course, this should have been done prior to your purchase of the home, but if you’re investing for the long term, it will likely need to be done again at some point. Neglecting this could mean overlooking faulty wiring or circuits, which can result in electrical fires.
- Check for water damage and leaks. Repairing areas with water damage can be a costly endeavor, so be sure to check the property over for leaks regularly. Take a look at the sinks, faucets, toilets, shower, water heater and anything else that has a water line running to it to be sure that all connections are tight and there are no holes or cracks in the lines.
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Not only do these devices save lives, they also can prevent thousands of dollars in damage. Most smoke alarms last around 10 years, while carbon monoxide detectors have a lifespan of 5 years. Set a schedule and replace batteries and units accordingly.
