St. George Island
St. George Island- Florida Panhandle Paradise
St. George Island is in Franklin County in the Florida Panhandle, enveloped by the Apalachicola Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The 28-mile long barrier island is connected to the mainland at Eastpoint, FL. From their original Creek Indian inhabitants to the present day, St. George Island has an interesting place in history and a tranquility that is alluring to its many residents & visitors.
From the 10th to 15th centuries, St. George Island was originally inhabited by the Creek Indian tribe. Eventually it was taken over by European colonists and the tract was ceded to the John Forbes Company in 1803. The Apalachicola River area saw an increase in trading during this time which led to the building of the original central lighthouse in 1833. Ships coming into the area used it to navigate the waters. Unfortunately, the landmark’s location had to be moved and rebuilt in 1848 & 1852. The last lighthouse was destroyed during a storm in 2005, was rebuilt in the middle of the island and reopened to the public in December of 2008.
