How do you rate "Experience" in a Realtor?

How many times have you heard the following conversation

"I'm thinking of buying a house soon" says Tom

"I have a great Realtor I can recommend, they have plenty of experience" replies Jane

But how should a future buyer determine what experience just means?
Does experience mean that they have been a Realtor for so many years OR does it mean they do so much in volume each year or they closed a certain number of deals each month?

If you take into account national averages your typical REALTOR® is a 57 year old white female homeowner with some college education.

She may have the "experience" in the number of years she has been working but just how many transaction does she close each year? As real estate is an always changing industry if you're closing 3-5 deals in the year you're not keeping up to date with new lending laws, new buyer programs introduced into the market place or changes made at a city municipal level.

If you watch HGTV and a fan of million-dollar listers not all realtors are fortunate to be dealing in this price point, Getting one deal at this price point could put that Realtor in as a high grossing experience Realtor.

Many Realtors deal in lower price points which can explain why the average Realtors income in $45000. But these smaller prices bring constant transaction meaning larger volume in the number of transactions a Realtor will close each month, so instead of one million dollar deal in the year, they are closing 5-10 deals a month. Hitting those singles instead of the home run.

Now who is more experienced? This Realtor closing 5-10 deals a month or the one that's been around 34yrs closing 5 a year or the one that closes that one million dollar home?

If you have any questions, regarding how to find an experience Realtor in your market. Feel free to reach out to myself or my team at Holton-Wise in assisting you, finding the right Realtor for you.

  1. Nice try at a thinly-veiled advertisement for referrals!
