Tying the Laces
As I am about a month away from starting my job, moving to a new town, and pursuing my dream in the real world all by myself, I decided it was a great time to take my downtime to educate myself.
Coming to the US as a generation 1.5 immigrant (child), our family was rather poor, but my parents worked many jobs to keep us fed and sheltered. They were, and still are, consumed by the fear of debt and delay on payments. I couldn't join sports teams, I couldn't buy new toys, I had to live in an imaginary world of free, online video games. I was a social outcast, I didn't know how to interact with people face to face.
Long story short, I took up scholarships and loans and forged my way to college. It was in college that I forced myself to interact with people, became reflective of others, and learned how to make friends.
As I made more friends and interacted with people, I learned a lot about people and their worries. Money was always a problem with the people that avoided talking about it, and a joy for those who spoke on and on about financial topics. Thus, I decided it was time I got this part of my life in order the April before graduation.
I spent April and May reading around 17 books on self-help, financial education, sophisticated investing, and Mastery. I developed an even clearer goal for what I want from life, what my goal is, and how I planned to get there. I just didn't have the specific education yet.
Around June 20th I discovered BiggerPockets. I found the launchpad for my education. I had so much to learn with so little background on specifics. Within a week, I find myself here today having read well over 50 articles posted here, the ultimate guide for beginners, and heard several interviews by Brandon. I finally decided to take action and analyze some deals myself using the BiggerPockets calculator, the 50% rule, and a little assessment of the neighborhood properties.
After analyzing 5 deals, I only came out with 3 mediocre deals. Evidently, I still have a lot to learn. But this marks progress. This is tying my shoelaces.
