I lost my forum posting privileges today for sharing BP content

Yep, that's right. I lost my forum posting privileges today. Let me tell you why.

New members always seem to have the same questions.

1. How do I get started on BP?

2. How do I get started with investing?

3 How do I find an investor-friendly agent?

If I had to type responses to those questions every day, my fingers would fall off. So to avoid losing my fingers, and try to help new members that just joined the forum I put together some blog posts that address the questions in detail. I posted those blog posts to my bigger pockets blog, and then I would share them with any new member that joins in my geographical area.

Cool, no problems yet! :)

Recently I decided to start sharing my welcome post with other new members outside my area, and this is where the problems begin.

I get a moderator who tells me that a post has been deleted because I am self-promoting myself on BP. Check out my post below:

Hello! @anynewmember

Welcome to BP, and congratulations on making the decision to invest in your future via real estate.

I have written a few blog posts that may help you get started here on BP, and with your investing. Please click on the links, give them a read, and share your thoughts in the comments.

First is a post that I feel will help not get overwhelmed with the amount of info that is here on BP:

The second is a post that will help get you focused with your real estate investing goals:

The last one is a post that will help you choose an “investor friendly” real estate agent. There are many agents out there, but it’s important to choose the right one.

I love answering questions if you have any! Good Luck :)

I ask this moderator to be specific and show me what rule I am violating. I have read the forum rules and terms of service. I see no mention of trying to help new members with answers to common questions being against any rules.

The moderator never answers the question specifically until after I get banned from posting for 7 days. His answer is:

"For repeated violations after being told you cannot post links to your blog, your posting privileges have been removed for 7 days" (before the ban I was never told it was for the links specifically)

Here is a bit of what I think is common sense.

LINKS DO NOT EQUAL SELF PROMOTION (especially links to a BP blog)

I make no mention of any product

I make no mention of any company

I make no mention of services

I make no mention of any website (aside from my BP blog where I take time to create content to help BP members)

Seems like a little common sense is in order. Read the posts. Then decide if its spam. Why should I take the time to contribute content to BP if I can't share it in the forum?

  1. As a newbie, I found this post extremely helpful. WAS going to post 'how to become an investor?' and you led me right to what I needed. Maybe this post needs to be a stickie!

I have spent the early hours of this morning reading your info dense posts.

Thank you for your efforts to help complete strangers.

    1. Thanks for taking the time to reply. Reading this after a few years makes me chuckle. I have since regained my ability to post. I feel it was something personal and that person has since departed biggerpockets management and I’m happy about that.

I still feel the same way. Posting links to a BP blog which gives a detailed answer to common questions asked by new members is not spam.
