Black Flies... and the Art of Succeeding as a Real Estate Investor

Pete… She yells… these buggers are drawing blood!  My only comment was “keep moving and they aren’t so bad.”

Just minutes before I found myself standing in front of a huge pile of leaves, sweating and being totally engulfed by the scourge of an early Maine summer.  Black Flies… everywhere… and as Vicky (my wife) indicated they draw blood!

I had not noticed them while I was working as I was constantly moving… working to get the yard raked (my immediate goal) of the previous years leaves.  Once I stopped… all bets were off however.

So… as a real estate investor what’s the lesson here?  How can these lowly Black Flies provide us with a lesson in success?

I hadn’t noticed the flies while I was taking action.  Working to accomplish the task at hand… raking leaves.  Yet when I stopped they were everywhere.

How many times has something similar happened to you?  As long as you were busy taking action like finding deals and making offers, creating or reinforcing relationships with lenders, contractors or agent... in essance constantly moving forward... you found that you never notice the minor or perhaps even major issues that many times stop you from your goals.

Or for some of you… being stuck and not taking any action.  Due to your perception of our current market, lack of funds, or overall fear.  And when you are in this “stuck mode” everything becomes an issue serving only to further keep exactly where you don’t want to be.

There was a popular radio commercial some time ago whose primary theme was… “There is stability in motion”.  How true that is. Whenever you are taking action to accomplish your goals you are creating a stable situation upon which to move forward from one step the next.

So… you see… these tiny, biting, blood drawing little vampires got me thinking about the art of success as a real estate investor… and they helped me to relearn that if you just keep moving… putting one foot in front of the other… you will achieve what you set out to.  And you will find that the flies in your life will hardly be able to keep.

To Your Success!
