Thoughts on Pitbulls

Normal 1462148210 Download

We have a local Facebook group called “For Rent (Cowlitz County)”. It has given us plenty of laughs and great insight into how applicants think.

There was a hilarious string on Facebook this week regarding a rental unit being infested with ants, but she spelled it “aunts”. People had a field day.  It got pulled down before I could capture it.

But discussions about pitbulls are interesting too. Seen this week:

I'm having a hard time finding a rental that will take my 5yr old female rednose. Does anyone have any idea of any decent landlords that will accept a friendly pitbull? I have a letter of recommendation from my previous landlord of 4years, for my dog and myself. No negative comments please, it's not the breed it's the owner.

And a few responses:

  • Most land lord don’t rent to people with pit bulls unless u get rental insurance! The reason why is because homeowners insurance don’t cover pit bulls
  • Get a letter stating he's your companion if you have mental health issues and the pet helps with them..
  • A business has a right to still refuse service to anyone they choose

Do you accept dangerous breeds?

We don’t.

I completely agree that homeowners can own whatever kind of dog they want. Renters, however, show their attitudes and inability to go along with societal norms when they get pitbulls and other difficult to house animals.

We have learned that we need to be really careful about applicants calling their pitbulls terriers or mixes.  We need to see the pet before we approve it.

And the pitbull controversy rages on...
