Getting Over The Real Estate Hurdles
The day in the life of a real estate investor isn't always the way it appears on late night t.v.
We don't all sit around on a boat, surrounded by women clad in bikinis, sipping champagne all day long. Being a real estate investor takes work and there is always something unexpected that pops up. Always.
Real estate investing is just like any other j.o.b. or business ~ it has it's challenges. How or if you overcome those challenges has to do with your vision for yourself. Your "BIG WHY," if you will.
In my 20+ years of working with investors the one thing that remains clear is that if you don't have a REAL reason for wanting to be successful in this business then you won't weather the difficulties. The first sign of adversity and you're gone.
Real estate investing is simple. It's not easy. It's the best business I know of when it comes to ROI and I can't imagine doing any other business. Besides teaching people how to do what I do. That's a fun business too.
However, on a day to day basis, there are going to be hurdles that need to be overcome. Appraisals that don't come in where you expect them; home inspection problems you hadn't budgeted for; title issues that need to be resolved before closing; values that aren't where you thought that were, and the list goes on and on.
The key to getting over the hurdles you're inevitably going to face as a real estate investor is to know why you're doing all of this.
Oftentimes my partners throughout the U.S. will start out by telling me they just want to make "x" amount of money. I'll ask them what they want to use the money for. Then they'll tell me they want to leave their job. I'll ask them what they want to do with their time then. They'll often say, I want to be a full time investor, like you, and make all kinds of money. I'll ask them again, what are you going to do with the money?
Money is almost never the root of what a person wants and it's certainly not enough of a motivator to keep you going through the hard times.
You have to dig deep to determine your true motivation. What will you do with the money? What will you do with the time? How will you spend it? Who will you help? Who will you spend your time with or doing?
The answers to those questions are what keep you motivated and help you overcome the obstacles and sustain the work necessary to become a successful investor.
