Skeleton key ... in 2013?

I went to look at properties today, which was unfortunately cut short due to rain.

The first property was listed for $25,000 but had massive foundation problems, such that the floors in the basement were coming up and the walls had very large cracks in it. The main floor was not level at all and almost none of the walls had drywall on them -- most likely because the couple walls that did had large cracks in them (which people helpfully put expanding foam into). PASS!

At the third house I went to, inside the lockbox was none other than a skeleton key! The listing agent said to use the skeleton key on the front door. That did work, however I was unfortunately unable to get inside because there was another lock holding the door closed.

But really ... a skeleton key in the lockbox to open the door? In 2013?

I guess when you go to look at properties, you'll never know what you're going to find! (I think I'll now call them "Bigger Pockets blog posts"!)

  1. I still have not been able to get into the "skeleton key house" (as it's now nicknamed). My agent keeps trying. The selling agent swears the key works. I guess we'll see.

  2. Dawn: When I was younger (in the 70s), our home was an old second empire house and the keys to the front & rear doors were both skeleton keys. There was also an old fellow in town who fabricated (not just cut) skeleton keys.
