Don't Water Your Weeds

For my day job, I visit many different companies. Periodically I see inspirational quotes on the walls of employees.

Today's quote that I saw was "Don't Water Your Weeds".

I thought about this with respect to real estate. This means that you shouldn't put time and effort into things that aren't giving you a return. Sometimes you need to look through your property portfolio and decide which ones are actively making you money, and which ones are holding you back.

Those that are making you money, continue to "water" and nourish as they are going to provide you with value. Those that are not, or that are not providing as good of a return as you would like, you can perhaps offload to someone else. This doesn't necessarily mean dumping your problems on someone else -- sometimes one person's "trash" is another's treasure.

  1. This quote is also very applicable to humans as well, in any work environment. Employees, contractors, etc. Don't enable people who are creating a possibly hostile work environment or who are just simply undesirable for your business vision. Not to mention the I'll do better next time folks who need 5th and 10th Chances. You have to dig them up so they don't kill the grass. That being said, this would only pertain to those folks who you've already tried other ways of working with them and diplomacy, and those methods proved ineffective for those individuals. Great quote.

  2. great point!! i also thought this was going to address curb appeal :)

  3. Hahaha... Totally thought this was going to be about landscaping. :) Very good points though!
