There are some home improvements that aren’t worth your money.  These days you will find that upkeep is more common that upgrades.  And, unless you stay within a practical range for home projects you may be getting in over your head.  We have all asked the question “Will I get it back when I sell?”.  Therefore, I have a list of home improvements which have ranked last in a national study when it came to getting your money back from a renovation when you sell your home.

Upscale Master Suite Addition – Many homeowners would love to wake up in a five-star bedroom.  However, the price tag for a luxury bedroom addition is hefty.  The average cost for a luxury master suite addition averages $200,000.  In years past this was a trend, but these days sellers can only expect to recoup around 50% of investment on resale.

Home Office Remodel – A trendy home office will look like Starbucks in many homes.  You need connections for computers, wireless laptops, smartphones, PDAs, touch-screen tablets and more.  So, it is easy to spend $25,000+ on a home office remodel, but you will only recoup around 45% of your investment on the resale.

Bathroom Addition – Many families need an extra bathroom, especially large families.  However, a bathroom addition can be quite costly depending on what you want in it.  For a downscale bathroom addition you can expect to spend over $20,000 and for a luxury addition the price tag climbs well over $40,000.  You can only expect to recoup $0.50 on the dollar of your investment upon resale.
