Protecting Your Home When Traveling

As an avid traveler, I always make sure to protect my home before leaving. It's essential to keep your property and belongings safe while you're away. Here are some tips to help secure your home while on vacation.

First, consider installing a security system. A visible security camera can deter potential intruders, and smart home technology like smart lights and cameras can make it seem like someone is home. Deadbolt locks and window locks can also help secure your home.

If you're going to be gone for more than four days, it's a good idea to cancel mail and package deliveries or have a neighbor collect them for you. You can also ask someone to take care of your lawn and plants to make it look like someone is still around.

Use timers or smart plugs to turn on lights, TVs, or radios to create the impression that someone is home. If you have trusted neighbors or friends, ask them to keep an eye on your property or report any suspicious activity.

While it may be exciting to share your travel plans on social media, it's important to be careful about who can access that information. Lock away important documents and valuables in a safe or hidden location.

Before leaving, make sure your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are working properly. Don't forget to secure any secondary structures on your property and install motion-activated lights for added security.

Remember, the goal is to make your home look lived-in and well-cared-for, even when you're not there. By taking these precautions, you can significantly reduce the risk of burglary or other security issues while you're away. So go ahead and enjoy your travels, knowing that your home is as secure as it can be.
