Local Spotlight: Wax Poetic

Test your sense of smell and flex your creative muscles by making hand-poured, scented candles at Wax Poetic. The environmentally and health-friendly candles are made with soy wax, cotton wicks, and clean-burning fragrance oils. Wax Poetic flips the idea of candle-making on its head, amplifying the experience that cannot be replicated in any public space here in Grand Rapids.

Eastown is a well-established neighborhood in Grand Rapids with active retail and restaurant corridors along Wealthy Street and Lake Drive. Wax Poetic offers generous customer service with local stores nearby to shop while waiting for your order to be completed.

You’ll begin the process by heading to the Fragrance Bar. You’ll sniff your way through various single-scented candles to decide which scents to include in your creation. You can smell as many as you’d like, from rosemary to old books, pistachio to vanilla, and much more. There are more than 100 scents to choose from, so you’re not bound to any limitations.

Once you concluded with your favorite scents, it's time to select a container for your candle.

There are several types of holders that come in a few different shapes. I chose the clear signature jar priced at $30. The price of making a candle depends on the cost of the container you select, which ranges from $18 to $46.

After you select your container, you’ll make your way to the Candle Bar. You will start by getting a few bottles of your favorite scented oils to group together, squeeze, and take in a blend of fragrances. A staff member will help guide you in choosing the right blend. You can mix up to three of your favorite scents in a candle. Once you’ve decided on the right combination, you’ll mix your scented oils, then carefully pour and stir them into your candle container.
