Alger Heights Grand Rapids, MI: Your Guide to the Neighborhood

Alger Heights has many parks, a close-knit residential community and business association, and is known to be a nice family neighborhood by current and former residents. Alger Heights also offers a wide range of tiny mom-and-pop local businesses and eateries within walking distance. Anyone, at any stage of life, will love living in Alger Heights.

The homes are well maintained, and there are always people about, either with dogs or children. Neighbors are courteous, down-to-earth individuals and there is a sense of “community” throughout the neighborhood. When driving or walking through the area, it feels very safe and inviting.

The History of Alger Heights

The early history of Alger Heights date back to the early 1930s. During World War II and the Great Depression, it was the only neighborhood in Grand Rapids, MI, to experience expansion and growth.

In the 1940s, Alger Heights appealed to families recuperating from the war conflict as an inexpensive location with immediate availability and easy financing. At the time, industrialization became essential to city development and recovery, and Alger Heights flourished as a bustling business district.

Today, it is an area consistently at the top of lists such as “best places to raise a family.”

Alger Heights in MI Real Estate Overview

Grand Rapids’ Alger Heights neighborhood is a fantastic location for living and is considered an “up-and-coming” community. Despite its modest size, the area is home to a variety of local companies, historic houses, a walkable community, outstanding schools, and numerous special events.

Location: The Alger Heights neighborhood of Grand Rapids comprises sections between 28th Street, Eastern Ave, Burton St, and Kalamazoo Ave. The area can’t be beaten with an 11-minute drive from Downtown Grand Rapids by car or a short bike ride to unique boutiques. It’s in a beautiful setting near a creek, surrounded by parks and pathways, making it an ecologically aware community that values and appreciates nature.

Affordability: Alger Heights is a beautiful place to call home, and it’s also affordable if you know where to seek it. You can anticipate finding a mix of rental and owner-occupied homes and an excellent range of bungalows, cape cods, and two-story houses. Several fantastic starter properties won’t break the bank or older Victoria homes in the area that have been renovated.

Schools: Brookside Elementary, Alger Middle School, and Ottawa Hills High School are the three public schools in Alger Heights that have been rated excellent or higher by GreatSchools.com. Other institutions include Buchanan Elementary, New Branches Charter School, St. Francis Xavier, and Headstart at St. Francis Xavier. As always, make sure to check with the applicable school district prior to making any decisions.

Neighborhood Association: The Alger Heights Neighborhood Association is a non-profit organization that works to keep its residents informed and entertained throughout the year. They organize events such as the Alger Heights Halloween 5K, garage sales in the neighborhood, the Alger Heights Community Garden, quarterly newsletters, and many more.

Local Hotspots: Alger Heights, Grand Rapids

Known for its high rating for walkability and quaint atmosphere, it is an ideal spot to get to know and support local businesses.

Real Food Café

This breakfast/brunch spot is essential to the Alger Heights community, which is always humming on weekends. Be prepared to wait a long time, but the food is delectable and well worth it. This café only accepts cash or local checks at this point, so make sure to plan ahead of time.

Icons Coffee

Icons Coffee in Alger Heights is well-known for its fantastic coffee, Boba teas, and kind employees. Customers rave about the coffee being prepared daily and how the employees go out of their way to make everyone feel welcome. In addition, the cafe’s cozy atmosphere and position near major attractions and its affordability and accessibility have earned it high customer marks.

Great White Fish Chicken

Great White Fish Chicken is a Grand Rapids favorite for chicken. Everything from hush puppies to fish to chicken to pound cake is on the delivery menu. The chicken gizzards are a must-try!

Old Goat

The Old Goat is a contemporary industrial-style gastropub that specializes in American cuisine. The food at the Old Goat may be characterized as centric, and it’s a fantastic location to discover natural, high-quality, fresh, and inventive dining choices. And the best thing about the Old Goat is its great ambiance, incredible interior design, live music, and social atmosphere.

Brass Ring Brewing

The new microbrewery, Brass Ring Brewing Company, which opened last fall, has been the subject of much discussion in Grand Rapids. According to owner Chris Gibbons, the “brewery’s dedication to natural components and small batches” is what sets it apart.
