Where to Start Learning Real Estate Investing

Most of us, at one point or another, has come across real estate investing in some form. Watching the innumerable flipping shows on HGTV, hearing a radio ad for some seminar in town, seeing the "We Buy Ugly Houses" billboards, or hearing about slumlords in the news (you don't have to be a slumlord to be a real estate investor, FYI).

And when you see or hear these things and you think it might be a good idea, you probably wonder, "How would I even get started doing something like that?". I hear people say they don't know how to fix houses, or they don't know where they'd find the time or where they'd find a deal.

But really, you don't need to know any of those things to get started. You just need to start! Make sense?

You just need to start reading some blog posts here on biggerpockets.com, listen to podcasts on real estate investing, reach out to people in your network like real estate agents, lenders, and yes, landlords. As you read, listen, and talk with people about real estate investing, you will learn little things here and there that will all build towards you being ready for your first deal.

I love biggerpockets.com as a go-to resource with their blog, podcast, and the forums. I also enjoy listening to Pillars of Wealth Creation, The Real Estate Guys, Wealth Formula, Real Estate Strategies Podcast, Cashflow 2 Freedom Podcast and a few more.

My favorite real estate investing books I've read have been The Millionaire Real Estate Investor by Gary Keller, The Book on Low and No Money Down Investing by Brandon Turner, Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki (not so much how-to information on real estate investing, but really good for your mindset when it comes to thinking about assets versus liabilities), and the BRRRR Method by David Greene.

You may not know all you need to know at first (I still feel like I don't always know what I'm doing!) but if you start taking consistent steps towards learning about it, you can be doing your first deal within 6-12 months.

If you ever want help getting started, bounce ideas off someone, or ask questions about real estate investing, I'm always here!
