Leader's Log on a Date Which Will Live in Infamy

Many people can recall where they were at times of national significance or moments of catastrophe, and the same is true for “The President’s Own.” On Dec. 7, 1941, known as “a date which will live in infamy,” the organization’s actions are recorded in the Leader, the daily diary, or logbook, that was initiated in 1916 by Captain William H. Santelmann, Director of the Marine Band from 1898-1927.

From the log: Dec. 7, 1941: At 1 p.m., the Marine Chamber Orchestra performs at the White House for a luncheon, which the President does not attend. At 2:25 p.m., Assistant White House Usher Mr. Searles, informs the Marine Band Leader that Pearl Harbor has been attacked. Further description of world events and the weather follows.

Excerpt from a special edition of All Hands TV produced by the U.S. Navy commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack on Dec. 7, 1941. On the 70th anniversary of the attack, Pearl Harbor survivors share their stories about the day of infamy.

Union's Thomas Mahoney, formerly of Bergen County, was presented with the Bergen County Medal of Honor by County Executive Donovan. Mahoney is still haunted about that day that will live in infamy, but he recalled the joy of finding his fellow USS Curtiss shipman and brother Harold alive and well once the smoke cleared.

Always Remember. Never Forget.
