3 Quick Tips – To Stay Focused and Healthy Amid Coronavirus
“Energy Goes Where Attention Flows.” ~Tony Robbins
In the midst of the negative headlines and devastating market conditions, my wife and I decided to begin a 30-day Tony Robbins program called Personal Power. Tony is no stranger in our World, I have been listening to his content for more than a decade and my wife for the past 5 years or so. For those not familiar, Tony Robbins is a life coach, public speaker, philanthropist and has written several books in the self-help space with an emphasis on personal achievement, mindset and human phycology.
In the world right now, there is an inescapable sense of anxiety, stress, and uncertainty. I was quickly reminded of the importance of mindset and focus once we started the program. It can be easy to get swept away by the news stories, office chatter, and Facebook stories bombarding your environment. Being mindful doesn’t mean ignoring or avoiding the pandemic at hand. It simply means being present, aware, and distinguishing all that is going on in regard to the spread of coronavirus.
I felt compelled to share with you three helpful takeaways to help stay grounded and mindful:
#1 Focus on what you CAN control
We don’t have control over certain things in life, but we DO have control over how we choose to respond to circumstances and events. So how can you choose to respond to this pandemic? You can choose to react to the news and be driven by fear, causing anxiety and stress, or you can choose to prepare and become stronger. Some examples below:
Products/Goods: You might have trouble finding certain products such as hand sanitizer, face masks and other supplies, but you can still wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
Social: You might want to avoid or limit large social gatherings. Instead, you can switch to phone calls and video calls to stay connected with friends and family and keep your sense of community.
Work: Discuss with your boss the possibility of work-from-home options. Disruptions such as school, work, and business closures can cause anxiety and stress. But these are out of your control. The best thing you can do is be prepared for these disruptions to the best extent you can.
Finances: Where are some areas you could cut unnecessary spending? How can you save more in the case of an emergency? Who could you reach out for financial support if you exhaust your resources?
Fitness/Health: Instead of going to the gym, take a jog in nature, or do your workout at home. You can also purchase healthier foods and keep your immune system up!
#2 Energy Goes Where Attention Flows
Are you constantly watching the news, following every new case of coronavirus, talking about the outbreak with co-workers, friends, and family members? How are your anxiety and stress levels?
You can choose to grow your fear by being constantly inundated with this information or you can choose to focus on a belief that is true for you. For example, you might find peace by simply taking the necessary precautions laid out by the CDC to be as safe as possible.
My wife and I made a choice years ago to limit our exposure to the mainstream news. We are not being ignorant by avoiding the news, we are being selective of what information we expose ourselves to. We educate ourselves about the type of precautions we need to take, not out of fear, but out of discernment so that we can take the necessary precautions from an intelligent, non-emotional perspective.
#3 Take Care of Your Health (Mental and Physical)
Taking care of your health should always be a top priority no matter what’s going on in the World, but especially during times like these.
Sleep. Sleep directly affects your immune system. You are more likely to get sick after being exposed to a virus if you are not getting enough quality sleep.
Eat well and exercise. Healthy eating habits and exercise are vital to optimal health. Exercise and eating healthy promotes overall happiness and boosts immunity. My wife and I made a decision this past week to only buy the healthiest foods on our grocery list and eliminate the rest. It was surprisingly fun; it pushed us to question why we make certain purchases week after week. A good reminder that we don’t need much processed food in our life.
Meditation. Breathe, sit in silence and observe your thoughts without judgment. Meditating and practicing mindfulness has profound benefits to your health. We use an app called Headspace; it’s an excellent tool because it’s mobile and has hundreds of different meditations to choose from for stress, sleep, waking up, power naps, etc.
Conclusion:
Coronavirus is a real outbreak and deserves appropriate attention. Just keep in mind, the more you stress, the more you decrease your immune system. In addition, you are more susceptible to getting sick and more likely to make emotional decisions (rather than logical decisions).
