How Eye Contact Sees You Through

When was the last time you’ve had an eye to eye with someone?

Eye contact is important for the day to day grind at the office, but what exactly is its purpose in the daily 9 to 5? Well, a few reasons why eye contact is just as important as a mandatory office meeting are:

It cements your character in the workplace

Making little to no eye contact in the office might mold your character in the office to be known as either a shy, meek person or even a shifty person with a lot to hide.

Eye contact portrays confidence, sincerity, maybe even that you’re showing trust to your fellow co-workers if you’re not especially keen on eye contact at all.

It puts a lot of character into your persona at the office, resulting in your entire workplace see you as a confident, sincere, trustworthy co-worker, and that’s always a plus.

It shows effective communication

Another bonus to maintaining positive eye contact shows that you’re a good listener, and very attentive to boot!

Eye contact shows a dominant hand in your communication skills as it is an important body language that shows your interest and your attention to the co-worker of the office you’re talking to. Thus showing your workplace that you’re not just a stone wall and that you’re open to conversation.

It’s a sign of respect

Showing eye contact can be an utmost sign of respect.

Not that casting your eyes away from someone else’s windows to the soul is disrespectful! It just shows you’re more invested in them and what they have to say.

Strong eye contact is like a firm handshake. Grip it too loose, and they’ll think you’re not that into it. Grip it too hard and they think you’re trying too much. The right amount can result in a proper show of respect from both parties.

It shows that you understand

Good eye contact shows that you fully understand a situation, and in an office, this can work to your advantage perfectly.

From dealing with an irate customer face to face to having trouble with your boss telling you to take your task more seriously, holding your ground via eye contact can allow you to turn the emotional shipwreck of a disastrous one on one and have it sail in your favor.

It also can help with more personal emotional states such as a work friend telling you a problem they’re having at home, it shows them that you care and could even improve their situation as a whole. Sometimes a little proper attention can go a long way for someone in need.

Eye contact in the office shows that you aren’t shy. And actually leaves you open for conversation. This leads to opportunities in your job that never would have presented themselves had you kept your eyes off the prize.

Having an eye to eye with your co-workers and customers at the office can show your workplace your dominance and give you an aura of character, communication, respectfulness, and understanding.
