Preparing for Cold Weather In Your Multifamily

Since it’s still winter season, you might want to make sure your multifamily property is well-maintained.

Cold weather can disrupt your assets, which is why constant maintenance is needed to keep it running and comfortable for your tenants.

Here are some tips for maintaining and preparing your multifamily for cold weather:

Maintenance checks

If you have areas within your multifamily that are in need of maintenance, there’s no better time to get to them than now.

Check the roofing, windows, entrances, and exits of your multifamily before the cold weather hits your area. Make sure that these are secure against the chill of winter weather.

Additionally, make sure any holes or leaks are sealed up, otherwise, the cold may seep in when it arrives leading to unhappy tenants in your property.

Prepare your heating systems

It’s obvious that in chilling conditions, you and your tenants would need to feel cozy and warm.

In this case, prepare your multifamily’s heating system and make sure it is operational for the chilly weather. This should include making sure that the heat reaches each tenant of your property adequately. For this, you might want to consider upgrading to programmable thermostats.

Notify and prepare your tenants and staff

Winter mostly doesn’t come without warning and in most cases, it is up to you, as the owner of your multifamily asset, to alert your tenants and staff of the impending blizzards.

Prepare cold prevention tips, strategies on how to stay warm for the winter. And listen to any tenant’s complaints about damages to their unit or heating.

Stock up on cold-weather supplies

Your multifamily property will need to be well-stocked for when the cold weather hits.

Stock up on shovels for the snow, ice melt for when you need to clear a path in your multifamily, weatherproofing for your windows and doors, and emergency supplies. It’s certainly a bad idea to be unprepared for the worst that a cold storm may bring.

As harsh winters and cold temperatures can cause a wide range of issues on your multifamily property, It’s best that you have your multifamily be up and ready for anything.
