Are You Acting Like An “A” Student or A “C” Student

Hey there everyone, how are you doing? I just stepped out of the conference, which just had a great motivational presentation from a gentleman named Walter A. Bond and part of his presentation really spoke to me, so I wanted to share it with you. That is the whole mindset of a C student versus A student. I want to bring this to you by asking you: When you think about real estate investing, do you have the mindset of a C student or an A student? I can’t really speak to the mindset of an A student in school, as it was very clear in my family that a C was acceptable for me and I did everything I could to get that grade. But really what that meant is I didn’t try very hard, and I blamed others.

I didn’t do the homework, I didn’t look at the syllabus, and I didn’t read books. It was more about meeting the minimum, you know, reading cliff notes and such. Don’t read the book, write a paper that’s shorter than is required, that’s me. As a C student, I’m very familiar with that, but when we have this conversation and we step back and really understand what made A students, A students. It really comes down most often to three things. The first is that they listened. They listened to the teacher, understood the rules, asked questions when they were unsure so that they what the goal was. The next thing was that they understood and followed directions. Even if the directions were to write 20 pages, single space, they did it. Then there’s someone like me who would go in and do single and a half spacing, big paragraphs, and a larger margin. I was looking to cut corners and do the minimum.

Then the last thing that A students do, or execute, is really simple. A students listen, they follow instructions, and they execute. So if you are really getting started in real estate investing, what kind of mindset do you have? Are you listening? Are you following directions from people that you respect and are then actually executing? I talk about it all the time, you have to learn your market. Are you doing it? Are you looking at the MLS every day? Are you looking at realtor.com every day? What are the things that you are doing to help you learn the market?

Then you have to be able to compare deals. How are you comparing deals? I offer a spreadsheet in my course where I compare anything from a one-bedroom house to a multifamily multi-unit apartment building. I break it down for you and t’s very simple. Or do you have the C student mindset where you’re just going out and you’re looking for the minimum? Maybe you’re looking once a week, you’re bouncing around different markets and you’re wondering why you’re not getting anywhere. A lot of the people that I see online are acting like C students. You’re not following the instructions. You’re not listening and asking questions, and then you’re not executing as outlined. And I say this with the biggest caring heart I can. I want you all to be successful, but sometimes you need to get out of your own way. Real estate investing is about learning your market.

It’s about saving money for your down payment, living below your means, and understanding how to compare deals so you can buy a good or great deal. Next, it’s about executing. Getting from zero to one is hard, I understand. I’m trying to help you build confidence in yourself. I want you to be an A student. I’ll keep doing daily videos, so hopefully one of them catches your attention. I hope you’re listening and following directions. I’ve given everything on these videos and I hope it’s making sense. Finally, something I can’t check is whether or not you’re executing. I hope you’re looking every day and learning how to compare. If you need some help, take a look at the course and use the coupon code BOOK20. You’ll receive an autographed book sent to you as well as the course. I’m going to go back to the event now, take care.
