Help with Umbrella insurance
Hi experts, I am hoping you can help me with my unique situation. We used to live in US until last year. We own a couple of properties there and now all are rented out. Since we are not in the country at the moment, we don't have an auto or a home where we have a home owners insurance policy. All homes have a landlord policy.
I am told that to get an umbrella insurance, I need following,
1. to have a home owners comprehensive liability policy which is generally issued when you live in a home.
2. need an auto policy
Both of these I can't get given that I am outside of the country right now.
Any ideas on how I can still get an umbrella insurance ? Very much appreciate your help.
Thank you!

Hi Ana,
I'm an insurance agent licensed in CO & IA. You didn't mention where you rental properties are located, so I'll give a few general comments and you can contact me if you have more specific questions. Most standard insurance companies will want to have the owner's main insurance policies (home and auto) before they consider adding supplemental policies like umbrellas. However, there are companies out there that will handle more unique situations like yours. I recommend working with an independent insurance agent who has access to multiple companies so they can find you the best options. Search for one in the towns where your rental properties are located, so they have the best knowledge on the coverages and pricing available in those areas. I can refer you to someone if you are having trouble finding one.
Best of luck to you!
Kristine
I second @Kristine Hodges advice. There are companies that will write standalone Umbrellas
There are only a few companies who offer a non-standard umbrella policy (which is what you'll likely need). Personalumbrella.com and USLI are a couple companies my independent insurance brokerage uses.
Happy to be a resource for you, if need more information or have other questions.
Best of luck!
